With 13 Daytime Emmy nominations, the soap opera “As the World Turns” has the potential for a trophy-filled going-away party on an awards show being broadcast by the network that pulled the plug on it.

“General Hospital” led with 18 nominations Wednesday. “The Young and the Restless” had 16, “Sesame Street” had 14 and “One Life to Live” had 13. CBS will air the annual awards show from Las Vegas on June 27.

“As the World Turns” will air for the final time in September. It’s the second daytime drama CBS has canceled in two years, after “Guiding Light,” as the genre does a slow fade in popularity.

“As the World Turns” was not nominated for best daytime drama. Two of its actors—Jon Lindstrom and Michael Park—were among the five nominees for best lead actor in a soap. Maura West was nominated for best actress.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will give a lifetime achievement award to Agnes Nixon, a creative force behind many soap operas. One was “All My Children,” whose star Susan Lucci said Nixon helped create the very fabric of daytime TV.

Besides Lindstrom and Park, best actor nominees were: Peter Bergman and Doug Davidson of “The Young and the Restless,” and James Scott of “Days of Our Lives.”

Joining West as top actress nominees were Crystal Chappell of “Guiding Light,” Michelle Stafford of “The Young and the Restless,” Sarah Brown of “General Hospital” and Bobbie Eakes of “All My Children.”

The ladies of “The View” have a chance to repeat last year’s win as best talk show hosts. Their competition includes Rachael Ray, Bonnie Hunt, Dr. Mehmet Oz and the team of Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.

PBS dominated the children’s categories. Eight of the 10 shows nominated in the categories of best children’s series, best children’s animated program and best preschool children’s series were on public broadcasting.

Thanks Breitbart.

It seems pretty basic: if you’re running from the law, don’t keep updating your Facebook status. Apparently Chris Crego didn’t get the message.

Crego was arrested for assault in the fall of 2009 stemming from a bar fight in Lockport, NY, a little north of Buffalo. Crego pled guilty, but didn’t show for sentencing. Police issued a warrant for his arrest but he’d already left the state.

No problem.

Lockport Police Capt. Richard Podgers told CNN that detectives started looking for Crego on the Internet and quickly uncovered not only a Facebook page but also a MySpace account.

Crego posted his current residence as Terre Haute, Ind., and his place of employment, a tattoo parlor called Body Art Ink. He even included his work hours!

There’s more. Crego also proudly displayed the wanted poster of him that had been published in the Lockport paper, according to the Terre Haute Tribune Star.

Lockport police contacted U.S. Marshals in Indiana, who easily tracked Crego down Feb. 3. He was being held on a preliminary charge of escape, with a bond of $25,000.

“If it wasn’t for criminals like him our job would be a lot harder,” Capt. Richard Podgers said. The police even posted a thank-you note to Crego’s Facebook page that read “it was due to your diligence in keeping us informed that now you are under arrest.”

Crego has a hearing April 5 on New York’s request to extradite him, which he’s planning to fight.

Let’s see if Crego tells us what he thinks of jail food in his next post.

Thanks CBS.

A South Florida cabbie was tricked into making a 20 hour trip from Miami to Western Tennessee over the weekend. And he ended up getting stiffed, not getting a penny for his efforts.

CBS4′S Stephen Stock spoke with the cab driver victim by telephone and his colleagues on the streets about getting shorted on a very long trip.

From 7 at night to 4:30 in the morning, 6 days a week for 29 years Jean Desir has driven a taxi on the streets of Miami.

Despite two robberies, one at gunpoint, and countless riders who’ve stiffed him on fares, this past year has been toughest of all economically.

“This year has been really really hard,” the 54 year-old said, “really hard.”

That’s what makes the story of Desir’s fellow taxi-driver so tough to swallow this holiday season.

Police say Miami resident Luciolo Perez convinced a cabbie from Flamingo Taxis to drive him to Memphis, Tennessee. That’s a 20 hour cab ride to the middle of the country.

Then police say Perez stiffed the driver of $3,000 in cab fare, plus expenses such as gas and meals, which the cabbie paid with his own credit card.

CBS4 News spoke by phone with the cab driver, who drove this taxi half way across the country and back.

His name is Lelis Almeira.

Almeira refused CBS4′s request for an on-camera interview, saying he was tired frustrated and angry and,  “I just want to put this incident behind me.”

“(The money came) out of his own pocket,” said Almeira’s colleague at Flamingo Taxi, Joel Lubin.

That’s why Flamingo Taxi dispatcher Lubin is angry too. He said that a scam such as this hurts drivers especially hard, given the tough economic times they’ve suffered through this year.

“He didn’t have to do it,” Lubin said. “He spent all his money for the expenses. He put everything for meals on his credit card expecting to get paid.”

CBS4 reporter Stephen Stock asked: “And this happens?”

“This happens,” Lubin said. “He’s kind of lost faith in humanity. And I don’t blame him.”

“We ain’t going to promise something we don’t have,” said the woman in Memphis whom Perez had traveled to visit, Nellie Rose.

Rose insists she didn’t have the money and made that clear to Perez.

“I don’t know why the cab driver and him came on (to Memphis). That’s between them,” Rose said.

Memphis police arrested Perez and charged him with theft over $1,000.

Now, in addition to trying to find $3,000 in cab fare, Perez must find enough money to bond out of jail.

Thanks CBS 4.

Woo Hoo! New York hometown hero, David Letterman is king of late-night television again.

You just won’t hear him or CBS crowing about it anytime soon not after NBC gave the crown to Conan O’Brien based on one week’s ratings, much to their regret now. Letterman started his vacation last week with a four-week winning streak, the first since 1995.

It just all goes to show that late-night TV is experiencing remarkable changes in viewing habits, with more than Letterman and O’Brien in the mix. They’re even competing with machines; DVR playbacks of prime-time shows is a growing habit.

Experience shows the folly of counting O’Brien out too early. Still, can NBC truly be happy with a show that appears to turn off such a large segment of viewers?

Many of Leno’s older viewers have migrated to Letterman, although the CBS host’s audience gain doesn’t match what O’Brien has lost. Some have turned to ABC News’ “Nightline,” which has also seen its ratings go up.

Stay tuned.

Hannah Powell-Auslam just  learned about  her diagnosis, just last month, she wondered, ” ‘How could this happen? I’m ten.’ I was really shocked.”  Hannah felt a lump, doctors did an ultra-sound and discovered a tumor spanning nearly two inches. She has secretory carcinoma, a painful slow-growing cancer.

“The mass consists of both the solid component and also the fluid component, (which) we call the cystic component,” surgical oncologist Dr. Helena Chang explained.  ”I told my mom, ‘I just want to be a normal kid, go back to school, play sports,” ‘ Hannah says.

Hannah had a mastectomy. Now, her doctor says the cancer has spread to a lymph node, meaning more surgery or chemotherapy. But radiation is out.  ”If you radiate the developing breast,” Chang says, “it will never grow develop fully, because it becomes atrophic.”

Hannah’s family has started www.OurLittleSweetPea.com. Please stop by and read about this harrowing story.

“I’m going to set an example,” Hannah vows. “If there’s something wrong with your body, you tell your parents.”

CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton agreed, stressing that, “When girls are going through puberty and their bodies are changing, there are a lot of changes, physical, social and emotional. It can be an awkward time. Trust your instincts. We have to teach our daughters to trust their bodies, to not be afraid to bring something to their parents’ attention, to their doctors’ attention. And likewise, for the parent to say to the doctor, ‘This is not right. Please investigate it.’ The statistics are only there in medicine to guide us. There are always exceptions.”

Mark Landon, the eldest son of legendary actor Michael Landon, was found dead in his West Hollywood home on Monday. He was 60.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating and the cause of death has not been determined, but there is no suggestion of foul play. Landon starred in three films, most notably the 1991 CBS made-for-TV movie Us, which was written and directed by his father.

Rest in peace my friend.

Guiding to the $20,000 Pyramid

Guiding Light may be replaced by $20,000 Pyramid.  Neither Sony, the studio behind the supposed project, or CBS would comment about the prospect of Pyramid, but sources close to the situation told TV Week that producer Michael Davies (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) has been working on relaunching the gameshow. The network is also said to be considering other options to fill the hour hole, including talk shows produced in-house.

Pyramid has a storied history on CBS: The Dick Clark-hosted $10,000 Pyramid debuted on the network’s daytime lineup in 1973 before later moving to ABC and syndication. Pyramid later returned to CBS in the 1980s before being canceled in 1988. A syndicated version, hosted by Donny Osmond, was launched by Sony in 2002.

Obama Dips Again!

President Barack Obama’s approval rating has dropped and less than half of voters surveyed rate his performance as good or excellent, a new Zogby Interactive poll reveals.

In the survey of more than 4,500 likely voters conducted from March 20 to March 23, 50 percent of respondents rated Obama’s job performance as fair or poor, 49 percent said it was good or excellent, and 1 percent were not sure.

The positive approval rating was down three percentage points from a survey completed on March 5.

Nearly 9 out of 10 Democrats graded Obama’s performance as good or excellent, but only 9 percent of Republicans felt that way.

Overall, 47 percent of respondents said the nation is headed in the wrong direction, and 45 percent felt it is headed in the right direction, up from 40 percent on March 5.

Obama fared better in two other recent polls. In a CBS survey, 64 percent of respondents said they approve of the job Obama is doing, and 65 percent of those polled in a Gallup survey gave Obama a positive job approval rating.
